ESKIMO DANCING TO BE REVIVED IN KIVALINA!
CHRISTINA M. 'AIVAYAUQ' SWAN, aka Tina Swan decides to revive Inupiaq Dancing in Kivalina. Tina is a 24 year old Inupiaq girl who has lived in Kivalina all her life. She lives a very traditional lifestyle with her grandparents Joseph Sr. and Lona Swan. She is a self-taught piano player and sings with the singing youth group the Nutagaqs. Tina has been interested in dance of any style and has finally decided to revive the traditional Inupiaq Dancing in Kivalina which has been dormant for 30 years and running. She contacted Janet Mitchell, Administrator for the City Council, who has volunteered to assist with the event. Donation requests have already been sent in which three (3) have responded.
The dances that will be taught to the dance group are from her great-grandmother Martha Aivayauq Swan's dance songs. Incidently, that is where her Inupiaq name comes from.
Two dancers from the Kotzebue dance group have been contacted and have agreed to begin the process. They will be arriving to Kivalina on September 11 and will be here for a week.
The Kivalina group has already been invited to perform at the Trade Fair in Kotzebue which is being held in July of 2009. Imagine that!
