RELOCATION OF AVEC BULK FUEL TANK FARM

Alaska Village Electric Corporation, Inc. has 14 bulk fuel tanks that hold an average 10,000 gallons each.  The tank farm was seriously compromised in the 2005 storm season with the bank being only six (6) feet away from the nearest tanks after serious erosion activity.  During the 2005 October storm season, various options are thought of to address or attempt to stop the erosion, one of them being the wings of the DC3 plane.

The poles holding live wires are beginning to lean precariously towards the tank farm as the hold on them has been weakened by the erosion activity.  A loader is used to hold the pole up until AVEC personnel arrives to address the situation.  Because of the danger of the tank farms toppling over, the US Coast Guard informs local government officlals that if the threat is not addressed before the next shipping season, they would disallow the shipment of fuel.  That would be catastrophic for the community so AVEC comes up with a solution.  The easiest solution is to relocate the tank farm from Point A to Point B.

October 2007, AVEC contracts STG, Inc. to relocate the tank farm from the current site to the site between the Kivalina Native Stores tank farm and the McQueen School's tank farm.
